Just days ago, the Port of Hamburg reported a 4.1 percent growth in seaborne cargo handling, and a 7.5 percent increase in container handling.
Europe’s third-largest port is vital to Germany’s export economy. It boasts seventeen terminals, and last year handled 69.4 million tonnes of seaborne cargo and berthed 3,046 container ships.
This massive container shipping operation is the latest chapter in a storied history as one of the most important ports in the world, and one central to history’s most famous trading bloc: the Hanseatic League.
Why Hamburg is the ideal host for Intermodal Europe?
Today, Hamburg has become a technology powerhouse and media centre. The continued transformation and innovation of the Port of Hamburg reflects this, embracing green and smart shipping technology – it recently concluded a trial of 5G – and renovating derelict areas into tourist hubs.
It is both its present transformation and its long, storied history that makes Hamburg the perfect location for Intermodal Europe in 2019. After three years being hosted in neighbouring the Netherlands, the return to Germany will allow the event to grow and benefit from the vast local container shipping community.
With a number of key stakeholders headquartered in the region, such as Hapag Lloyd, Intermodal Europe will bring value to both its local and its international audiences. The city is also a hub for successful tech start-ups, including Container xChange and BOXXPORT, both of which will be exhibiting at the show.
Event Director Rob Fisher said “Visitors know they can come to Intermodal Europe to discover the latest developments and innovations designed to improve operations throughout the container and shipping industry. We're looking forward to being back in Hamburg – a vibrant city with a thriving intermodal community".
