The world's largest port is a key factor in the economies of China and Asia as a whole. It boasts high-tech smart terminals, and last year handled over 42 million TEUs, over a quarter of all international trading volume in China. This is in part thanks to the deep water Yangshan Port, which was built in 2005 to allow the Port of Shanghai to grow despite shallow waters near the shore.
This massive container shipping operation is the latest chapter in a storied history as one of the most important ports in the world, and one central to the ambitious and prosperous Belt & Road Initiative.
Why Shanghai is the ideal host for Intermodal Asia?
Today, Shanghai is an industrial powerhouse. The continued transformation and innovation of the Port of Shanghai reflects this, embracing the latest technologies in digitisation and port automation. The automated terminal not only increases the port's handling efficiency, but also reduces carbon emissions by up to 10%.
It is both its present transformation and its long, storied history that makes Shanghai the perfect location for Intermodal Asia in 2020. Aside from the Port, the many varied companies trading in and around the city are invaluable to visitors. From sustainable bamboo floorings to the latest sealing solutions, the shipping container is brought to life by the businesses of the city.
With a number of key stakeholders based in and around the region, Intermodal Asia will bring value to both its local and its international audiences. The China Container Industry Association (CCIA) welcomes its key members to the event, including CIMC, Singamas and CXIC.
Event Director Rob Fisher said “Visitors know they can come to Intermodal Asia to discover the latest developments and innovations designed to improve operations throughout the container and shipping industry. We're looking forward to being back in Shanghai – a vibrant city with a thriving intermodal community".
