SPEAKER INTERVIEW - Andre Wheeler
Can you give an overview of your conference topic/session?
The topic will cover the 6 BRI transport corridors and recent developments along the BRI, including alternative / competing strategies
Why is this an important topic to discuss?
The topic is important as it is changing the supply chain / logistics multimodal mix. Research to date is pointing to Rail becoming a disruptor to Sea freight as new spoke / hub network built (e.g. Khorgos inland / dry port) as Supply Chains move to: lower inventory levels, timeliness of delivery, focus moving to door-to-door delivery total cost versus unit cost.
What can attendees expect to learn and discover from your session?
They will get an understanding of the BRI, its plans, current activities and focus. They will also get an overview of competing strategies by India / Japan and Russia.
What do you think is the biggest issue being faced / discussed in your industry at the moment?
The BRI has potential to disrupt current supply chains and logistics, and Companies need to be adapt their logistics modes to the new mix / paradigm or run the risk of losing markets. Shipping will need to rethink vessel size as the BRI presents overall cost effective alternative.
What is the biggest lesson you learned in 2017?
The speed at which the BRI is taking shape and level of funding, for example rail development.
What do you think the biggest challenge for the industry will be in 2018?
Establishing free trade zones /special economic zones that would allow more efficient transnational trade. Overcoming infrastructure constraints such as: Rail Gauge, Road network, security (both cyber and physical security).
What innovative measures should the industry adopt in the next few years to ensure market sustainability and growth?
Improved IT operating systems that allows greater Supply Chain transparency and the introduction of Block Chain in trade.
Why do you think events like Intermodal Asia are important for the industry?
Brings people together that are involved in the logistics / transport and allows the sharing of information and ideas so that solutions found and common direction found.
