SPEAKER INTERVIEW - Jessica Zhang
Can you give an overview of your conference topic/session?
My session is to touch base on the Hanjin crisis to provide a case overview and a summary of crisis management.
Why is this an important topic to discuss?
Hanjin Shipping was the 7th largest container carrier in the world so their bankruptcy was indeed a global supply chain event that ripped through the entire industry. The Hanjin case has almost closed but there are other shipping companies still dealing with financial downturn. As a shipper, I want to share some experiences on what we have learned from the Hanjin case and what we could do to mitigate the risk for future logistics operations.
What can attendees expect to learn and discover from your session?
I hope attendees can learn from this case to improve readiness and reactivity to such situations in the future
What do you think is the biggest issue being faced/discussed in your industry at the moment?
Capacity, which does not mean only vessel space, but also equipment, and to some extent the back-office capability & capacity of each carrier to manage increased volume. The new Alliance will take time to revamp the internal process which may also impact their service offering to customers.
What do you think the biggest challenge for the industry will be in 2017?
Shipping capacity and the operation management of shipping capacity, especially to the alliance reshuffling.
What innovative measures should the industry adopt in the next few years to ensure market sustainability and growth?
Shipment visibility tools and more transparent financial status from each carrier
