SPEAKER INTERVIEW - Edoardo Podesta
Can you give an overview of your conference topic/session? Why is this an important topic to discuss?
In my “Case study: Interlocked multimodal supply chain solutions between China and Europe”, the audience will gain insights how worldwide logistics chains can be managed efficiently by interlocking different transport modes including railway. Real-life business cases from different industries bring supply chain design to life.
Why is this an important topic to discuss?
Multinational companies, who are active beyond the borders of their home countries, need to maintain their responsiveness and time-to-market even when facing an increasingly complex environment. The proactive design of multimodal supply chains is an enabler to stay competitive in volatile markets.
What can attendees expect to learn and discover from your session?
Know-how, experience and a strong logistics network are key success factors to handle processes across different transport modes. A logistics partner is capable to add value to a company’s supply chain by managing the multimodal integration of logistics services efficiently.
What do you think is the biggest issue being faced/discussed in your industry at the moment?
Economically, unbalanced supply and demand in both, the sea and air freight industry, lead to volatile prices and fluctuating service levels. Digitalization has been making technology an indispensable part of our private life and business but it also brought new challenges like big data handling. Business-wise, e-commerce is still constantly changing the shape of the logistics industry.
What is the biggest lesson you learned in 2016?
The logistics world is so interlinked and prone to disruption that the disappearance of a single player like Hanjin can create huge ripples throughout different industries which may take months to stabilize.
What do you think the biggest challenge for the industry will be in 2017?
We will need to find a way to bring the complexities and the volatility back to a more manageable level.
What innovative measures should the industry adopt in the next few years to ensure market sustainability and growth?
The logistics industry will need to innovate more and faster in terms of electronic data management to stay adaptable and responsive.
Why do you think events like Intermodal Asia are important for the industry?
Events like Intermodal Asia help members of the logistics community to keep on track with current trends. The fair is an excellent platform to discuss with one’s peers and get fresh ideas for the own business.
